church & state

so i was thinking...
was Jesus Christ a liberal, or a conservative? there are so many angles to the subject, it almost gave me a headache.

it's a matter of reference, i think. are you referencing to todays views of liberal and conservative or to those of the jews of his time? or the romans of his time - it was their political system in place.

well, he was obviously liberal to the jews of his time. te romans just couldn't understand a Word He said (een the ones who spoke Hebrew).
i meant, would He have been a republican or democrat?

he was against the death penalty for trangressions. he drank. he kept company with the dregs of society - whores, sinners, tax collectors, more whores, poor people. had nothing to do with the 'religious right' of his time. preached tolerance for all people regardless of lifestyle or race. paid taxes voluntarily. i don't know if you could peg him into one or the other.

I believe in today's political climate, he would have been called a no good fence-sitter. Democrats and Republicans would have equally disliked him, much like they hate having to go out and campaign year in and year out and beg for support from "purple Americans" who have the audacity to have complex political views.

personally (as if there were some other way to blog) i think he was probably the first independent candidate . . . and wildly popular by many accounts :-) perhaps the treatment of Jesus is the reason why so few opt for an independent platform even today ?!?!?!?
